DAY TOURS

SAVO ISLAND TRIP

Savo lies to the North West of Honiara, an island with an active volcano and two dormant but potentially dangerous craters nearby. The volcano was last active in 1835 and Mendana witnessed an eruption when he discovered the region in 1568.

There are many hot springs and thermals on the island, which offer the optimim temperature for the rare megapode birds to bury their eggs until they hatch.

Because of its proximity to Guadalcanal Island and the hotly contested nature of the battles for control of the Solomon Islands, Savo Island figured in many of the naval engagements of the Solomon Islands campaign. It is most well known as the location of several naval battles fought in the adjacent "Ironbottom Sound" during World War II, between the Allied naval forces and the Imperial Japanese Navy.
