The Matanikau River is located in the northwest part of Guadalcanal. During the World War II Guadalcanal campaign, several significant engagements occurred between United States and Japanese forces near the river.
Matanikau falls is one of the most striking Waterfalls in
Honiara, the South Pacific, as well as the world. It is a double sided
falls which cascades into a steep cave. The cave is full of stalagmites,
swooping, swallows and baths.
A visit to the Waterfalls in Honiara will provide you glimpses of the history of the land too. The cave into which the Matanikau falls plunges is also of historical significance. The cave was the protective shelter of the Japanese soldiers during the second world war. There are excellent swimming holes at the foot of the falls, perfect for soaking the feet after your short trek. Matanikau falls should not be missed out on a trip to Honiara.
